26th Annual AIDS Walk/Run
ACR Health raised $116,602 at the AIDS Walk/Run. We also raised awareness about HIV and the recent dramatic decline in new HIV cases in Onondaga County.
The Director of the AIDS Institute of the New York State Department of Health, Johanne E. Morne, told the sizable crowd assembled for the 26th Annual AIDS Walk/Run that ETE is on target to succeed.
“The current record-low number of new HIV diagnoses in New York State is just one indication of Ending the Epidemic’s success to date. Onondaga County itself has had a 43% decrease in people newly diagnosed with HIV, from 53 in 2012 to 30 in 2016. This is the time to continue to move forward together to build upon these successes.”
Director Morne also reported that, in Onondaga County, 70% of people newly diagnosed with HIV were virally suppressed within six months, meaning that they cannot pass on the virus. As of 2016, there were 1,200 people living with diagnosed HIV in Onondaga County.
ETE launched a massive effort, through HIV testing, to locate individuals who have HIV and bring them into care. In New York:
- An estimated 121,900 persons are living with HIV
- - Health officials estimate that 93% of them have been identified
- - Of those, 80% are receiving medical treatment, and
- - Prescriptions for PrEP, a daily medication to prevent the spread of HIV, have quadrupled
Since 1983, New York State has aggressively fought AIDS; new cases peaked in 1993; and New York State has experienced a 79% decrease in new HIV cases over the past 26 years.
“AIDS was an epidemic at the time of the first AIDS Walk/Run in 1993, and remains a threat despite recent progress,” said ACR Health Executive Director, Wil Murtaugh. “Today, as we strive for LGBTQ equality, we face new epidemics of addiction and poverty, along with HIV/AIDS. All of these must be addressed for our community to succeed and thrive.”
The 26th Annual AIDS Walk/Run is ACR Health’s largest outreach and fundraising event Central New York. 100% of the money raised stays in the in CNY to support ACR Health’s mission to create healthy communities by opening doors for those advocating for LGBTQ Equality, and fighting against AIDS, Addiction, and Poverty.
